Lady Hurricanes Raise The Barr On Opening Night

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Georgia Southwestern women's soccer player Alisa Barr netted the Lady Hurricanes first goal of the season as they secured a 1-0 victory Thursday evening over Brewton-Parker on Hurricane Field.

In the 15th minute, GSW locked themselves in with a corner kick from the right side. Off the kick and a bounce, Alison Rugel snuck it to Barr where she shot from five yards out into the top left corner of the net for her first career goal. Brewton-Parker had plenty chances to counter to tie the game but came up short as they outshot the Lady Hurricanes, 17-13.

Goalie Hannah Morrone picked up the win along with her first career shutout, getting five saves on the day. Rugel led GSW (1-0-0) with three shots and two on-goal while Barr, Shyla Stoops and Payton Johnson all had two shots each, with one landing on goal.

For the Barons (1-2-0), Mackenzie Stewart and Vianey Rivera led the way with five and four shots, respectively; with each having two on-goal shots. Brewton-Parker also led with six on-goal shots compared to GSW's five.

GSW opened their season in front of a crowd of 350 plus people as many came to watch the game, but stayed for the fireworks that followed after the men's game.

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes take a short trip to Cochran, Ga., where they will play Middle Georgia on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
