Quartet Named To PBC All-Academic Women's Tennis Team

AMERICUS – The Georgia Southwestern women's tennis team placed four student-athletes on the 2016 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team announced recently by the league office. GSW juniors Sydnee Smith and Jamie Thomas, along with sophomores Ashley Denby and Anneliese Leahy, earned the recognition.

Smith was named to the team for the third consecutive year. The Pelham, Ga., native holds a 3.40 GPA as a nursing major. She led the Lady Hurricanes this spring playing No. 1 singles along with No. 1 doubles, where she won four matches with Leahy.

Thomas, a two-time All-Academic honoree, holds a 3.79 GPA as an early childhood education major. The Waycross, Ga., native picked up a couple of wins at No. 5 singles and split time at No. 6 with Denby. She joined Lauren Resnick to play No. 3 doubles.

Denby holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a history major. The Cordele, Ga., native saw action at No. 6 singles and partnered with Thomas periodically at No. 3 doubles.

Leahy holds a 3.48 GPA as nursing major. The Augusta, Ga., native played in several different slots for the Lady Hurricanes in singles this spring, including No. 1 where she picked up a win against Albany State University, but spent most of her time at No. 2. She tallied five doubles victories throughout the spring at No. 1, with four coming when paired with Smith.
