Marshall Wins Twice At Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Georgia Southwestern senior Oliver Marshall picked up wins in both singles and doubles play Saturday afternoon, but the team results favored Emmanuel College as GSW suffered a 7-2 loss on the men's side and an 8-1 setback in women's action.

Both Hurricane programs see their records even at 2-2 this spring.

GSW returns to action on Friday with a 2 p.m. home match against Fort Valley State.

GSW MEN 2, EMMANUEL 7

Marshall and Steven Blythe were the first off the courts in doubles play as they defeated David Forehand and Lucas Pereira, 8-5, at No. 1 to give the Hurricanes an early lead. Joel Landis and Jonathan Martin looked to give GSW a second doubles victory at No. 3, as their match was the last to finish, but the Hurricanes team came up on the short end of an 8-5 decision.

Several of the matches in singles went down to the wire as well. Marshall defeated Guillaume Watteeuw, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), at No. 5. Blythe won his second set in a tiebreaker to force a third set at No. 1. Joel Landis went to a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match at No. 4 and with the team result already decided, Martin was held to a tight eight-game pro set at No. 6.

GSW WOMEN 1, EMMANUEL 8

Celia del Castillo earned the Lady Hurricanes lone point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Maria Raich. Del Castillo couldn't quite make it a 2-for-2 day as her match at No. 1 doubles with teammate Maria Taboada ended in a close 8-6 result.

Charli Allen forced a tiebreaker in the second set of her match at No. 4 singles before falling to Victoria Silva, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
