A Marked Improvement

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team saw a significant improvement in times on the course at the Sumter County Parks & Recreation Sports Complex over the course of the 2013 season culminating in a 10th place finish at the Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday morning. 

GSW opened the season hosting its annual Remembrance Run and concluded the regular season on on the same course with the PBC event. The Lady Hurricanes had five runners shave more than two minutes off their time on Saturday.

Jessi Young paced the Lady Hurricanes by finishing the 6K course in 22:50 for 20th place out of 100 competitors. Young shaved 2:10 off her time at the Remembrance Run.

Daria Woods crossed the finish line second for GSW with a time of 25:07, good for 67th place, while Linda Esparza was the third GSW runner across the line in 25:27. Woods was 2:54 faster and Esparza was a second better than Woods' improvement at 2:55. Lisa Espino finished 72nd overall by finishing in 25:28 and Raven Martin took 79th in 26:04. Martin was 2:59 ahead of her Remembrance Run time. Mikaela Shimko posted a time of 27:14 on Saturday which was a significant improvement of almost six minutes (5:53).

With 54 points, Flagler College finished comfortably ahead of Columbus State (96), for the PBC team title. 

Freshman Sara Mund from Flagler crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 21:35.

The Lady Hurricanes move on to NCAA Regionals held Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. in Charlotte, N.C.
