Lady 'Canes Take Second Place At Remembrance Run

AMERICUS - Sophomore Ashleigh Owens led the Georgia Southwestern cross country team to a runner-up finish at the Sixth Annual GSW Remembrance Run held Saturday morning at the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Sports Complex. Owens paced the Lady Hurricanes by finishing the 5K course in 21:22.38 for eighth place out of 34 competitors.

Lauren Ard opened her sophomore campaign with a time of 21:44.06, good for 11th place while fellow sophomore Victoria Hickom was the third GSW runner across the line in 22:07.44. Freshman Savannah Ross finished 14th overall by finishing in 22:11.34. Sophomore Shelby Parsekian and freshman Eyonnti Edwards went back-to-back for 17th and 18th place, respectively, while sophomore Mary Catharine Calcutt finished 24th.

With 15 points, Columbus State finished ahead of GSW (49) for the team title. Albany State (88) grabbed third place in the team standings while South Georgia State College (103) was fourth. Point University had four runners participate and Fort Valley State saw two of its runners complete the course while two more were unable to finish due to injury.

Rayna Green from Columbus State crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 19:53.85 to win the event for the second straight season.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Friday when they head to Carrollton, Ga., for the University of West Georgia Wolves Cross Country Invitational.
