Lady 'Canes Take Second Place At Cougar Invitational

FORT BENNING, Ga. - Sophomore Ashleigh Owens led the Georgia Southwestern cross country team to a runner-up finish at the 2015 Columbus State Cougar Invitational held Friday evening at Stewart Field in Fort Benning, Ga. Owens paced the Lady Hurricanes by finishing the 5K course in 20:20.40 for eighth place out of 23 competitors.

Savannah Ross was right behind Owens with a time of 20:33.50, good for ninth place while teammate Katherine McGarr was the third GSW runner across the line in 21:21.80, placing 10th. Freshman Eyonnti Edwards finished 12th overall by finishing in 21:57.50. Sophomore Mary Catherine Calcutt finished with a time of 22:23.20, placing herslef with the 13th spot. Sophomore Victoria Hickom had a time of 22:27.50, she was 14th out of the 23 ladies competing. The final Lady 'Cane to cross the finish line was Shelby Parsekian with a time of 22:53.10.

Owens and Ross posted times that rank them fifth and sixth all-time, respectively, in a 5K race for the GSW program.

Finishing with 15 points, Columbus State took home the team title. The Lady 'Canes came in the runner up spot with 49 points. Tuskegee University (85) was third in the team standings.

Rayna Green from Columbus State crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 19:16.20 to win the event.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Friday, Oct. 2, when they head to Newman, Ga. for the SCAD Atlanta Invitational at 5:30pm.
