Lady 'Canes Bring Home Another 2nd Place Finish

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Ashleigh Owens led the Georgia Southwestern cross country team to a runner-up finish at the University of West Georgia Wolves Invitational Friday evening at the UWG Athletic Complex. Owens paced the Lady Hurricanes by finishing the course in 18:30.83 for sixth place out of 29 competitors. In what was supposed to be a 6K race, but was inadvertently cut short, and ended up being closer to a 4K.

Katherine McGarr followed four slots behind Owens with a time of 19:00.13 for her second Top 10 finish of the fall. Lauren Ard was the third GSW runner across the line, placing 11th in 19:01.69.

Connie Lewis (19:56.82) shadowed Savannah Ross (19:55.04) to the finish as the duo placed 15th and 16th. Morgan Cambron-Miller had a time of 20:19.92 for 18th place. Neeli Fortson (20:31.06) and Mary Catharine Calcutt marked the third GSW duo to cross the line back-to-back on Friday as the two completed the course 21st and 22nd overall.  

Finishing with 45 points, West Georgia took home the team title. The hosts had three runners finish in the Top 10 of the individual standings to squeeze past GSW (58). Albany State (70), Shorter University (73) and Clark Atlanta (101) rounded out the team standings.

Leah Sikorski from Shorter crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 17:10.89 to win the event.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Oct. 22 when they head to Montevallo, Ala., for the Peach Belt Conference Championships.
