AMERICUS - A pair of Georgia Southwestern State University student-athletes received awards at the Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championships Banquet on Friday evening in Milledgeville. Katherine McGarr was named to the Peach Belt All-Academic Team and Ashleigh Owens earned All-Sportsmanship accolades.

McGarr, a sophomore from Cordele, holds a grade point average of 3.314. The History major has placed in the Top 15 at three of the Lady Hurricanes five races this fall. Her best result was an eighth place finish at the Columbus State Cougar Invitational on Sept. 24.

Owens, a junior from Macon has led GSW in every race this season. Along the way she posted some of the fastest times in school history, including the program's sixth-fastest 5K time which came at the Columbus State Cougar Invite and the eighth-fastest 6K time which was posted at the PBC Championships on Saturday. 

The PBC All-Academic team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of Peach Belt student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution. The PBC Sports Information Directors oversee and select the teams.
