Saving Their Best For Last; Owens Exits On Top

FORT BENNING, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team finished 9th of 11 teams at the Peach Belt Conference Championships hosted by Columbus State University Saturday morning at Stewart Field. Senior Ashleigh Owens set a new GSW cross country 5K record, breaking her own mark set Sept. 23, completing the course in 19:09.1. Owens shattered the previous pace by 18.32 seconds. She wasn't the only Lady Hurricane to wrap up her season on a high note. All seven members of the team ran season-best times in the finale.

Owens took 25th place out of 85 competitors. Katherine McGarr posted a time of 20:22.2 to place 54th. Savannah Ross was the third Lady Hurricane to cross the line, finishing 65th overall at 21:34.7. Connie Lewis (21:38.8) followed in 67th place. Daria Woods (23:53.2), Erica Day (24:56.8) and Hannah Brown (25:24.9) rounded out the Lady Hurricanes effort.

GSW raced on the same course on Sept. 23. The Lady Hurricanes saw marked improvement in times across the board Saturday. Day saw the biggest jump as she shaved 2:25 off her September time. Ross took more than a minute (1:16) off her pace. Brown (0:59) and Lewis (0:44) were just shy of the one-minute mark. McGarr (0:34) was significantly faster as well.

The University of North Georgia placed five runners in the top 12 to finish with 42 points and edge Augusta University (52) for the team title. GSW was 13 points shy of eighth place Francis Marion.

Katherine Yost from Georgia College crossed the finish line in 17:18.8 to win the race.
