Lady Canes Open Season at VSU Border Clash

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Senior Katherine McGarr led the Georgia Southwestern State University women's cross country team in their season-opening race, the Valdosta State University Border Clash, Friday evening at Freedom Park. McGarr completed the 5K course in 22:09.9 to finish 35th out of 69 competitors, shaving 20 seconds off her 2017 time at the same event.

Junior Connie Lewis was the second Lady Hurricane across the finish line Friday, posting a time of 23:33.0 to place 47th. Freshman Retchiel Roble was the third GSW runner in, placing 50th in 23:58.5.

Senior Savannah Ross knocked 2:06 off of her 2017 Border Clash time (24:50.4) to finish 55th and newcomers Alex Exum (27:33.2), Nathalie Maralunda (28:21.3) and Grace Regan (29:19.3) followed for the Lady Hurricanes. 

Finishing with 21 points, the University of Tampa took home the team title for the second consecutive year. The champs had eight runners finish in the Top 11 of the individual standings to distance themselves from runner-up Flagler College (46).

Zoe Jarvis from Tampa crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 18:47.0 to win the event.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Sept. 15 when they head to Beech Island, S.C., for the Jaguar XC Invitational hosted by Augusta University.
