AMERICUS - Newcomer Alan Arnett came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points, grab a game-high seven rebounds and lead the Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team to a 67-62 win over Brevard College on Saturday afternoon in the Storm Dome.

The Hurricanes evened their record at 1-1 while Brevard fell to 0-2.

GSW grabbed a 7-0 lead and held the Tornados scoreless for the opening 6:50 before BC went on a 10-2 run to pull ahead of the Hurricanes.

The game remained close until the end of the first half when GSW scored 10 unanswered points in a two minute span, capped by a 3-pointer from Arnett, and led 31-19.

BC's Dominique Pickett and Arnett swapped 3-pointers over the final 1:03 of the first half to make the halftime score 34-22.

The Hurricanes held an 18-5 points off turnover advantage over the opening 20 minutes.

A layup by Milos Kleut on Southwestern's opening possession of the second half gave GSW a 14-point lead, 36-22.

BC pulled within seven points on three different occasions before Jamon Hawkins delivered a 3-pointer with 4:30 left that opened the GSW advantage to a game-high 15 points.

BC eventually clawed within nine after Pickett sank a free throw with 35 seconds remaining.

The Hurricanes followed by missing three of six free throws.

Pickett made a 3-pointer and BC teammate Gerel Simmons added a free throw and a 3-point basket of his own in the closing seconds to round out the scoring.

In the second half it was BC with the points off turnovers advantage (12-7).

After going to the line for 30 free throws in the opener against Fort Valley State, GSW added 28 attempts on Saturday. The Hurricanes struggled from the charity stripe and connected on only 14. Southwestern actually shot a better field goal percentage than free throw percentage. GSW shot a sizzling 54.8 percent from the floor against BC.

The Tornados shot 45.7 percent.

GSW held the advantage in rebounds (31-21), points off turnovers (25-17) and points in the paint (28-20).

Southwestern had three players score in double figures as Hawkins and Austin Kelly scored 12 points apiece to join Arnett.

Pickett led all scorers with 22 points. Simmons added 15 for BC.

The Hurricanes resume their five-game home stand on Saturday (11/17) against local foe Albany State at 7:30 p.m.
