Convocation Center Curse Continues

Convocation Center Curse Continues

AIKEN, S.C. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University men's basketball team remains winless in the Convocation Center after an 83-68 loss at USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon. The Hurricanes fall to 0-13 all-time in the building - including postseason contests - and 0-10 as the road team in the series with the Pacers.

The loss is GSW's third straight and the Hurricanes record falls to 5-3 overall this season and 0-2 in the Peach Belt Conference. USC Aiken won its seventh in a row to improve to 7-5 overall, 3-0 in the PBC.

How It Happened: GSW fell behind 11-4 out of the gate, but a Josh Press 3-pointer pulled the Hurricanes within four points and the deficit would not exceed four until 7:14 left in the first half. USC Aiken led by nine moments before the break when Abdul Dial was called for an offensive foul that waived off a made basket in the paint. On the ensuing inbounds heave by USC Aiken to half court, with three seconds on the clock, GSW committed a foul and Faison Brock proceeded to sink a pair of free throws. That four-point swing saw a potential seven-point margin swell to 11, 37-26, at halftime.

The Hurricanes pulled within eight points of the Pacers on three occasions early in the second half, but that's as close as they could get.

GSW finished with a slightly higher shooting percentage (45.6 percent) than USC Aiken (44.3 percent), but struggled from long range (3 of 20) and at the charity stripe (13 of 20). The Pacers made the most of their free throw opportunities, connecting on 24 of 26 attempts. GSW has lost the rebounding battle in all three of its losses this season, including its largest margin, 44-27, on Saturday. Second chance points heavily favored the home team, 21-2.

Who Stood Out: Dial led the Hurricanes with a season-high 20 points behind 8 of 13 shooting. He added six rebounds and led the team with three steals. Jamari Dean scored 13 points and Soloman Thomas chipped in 11. Devon Higgs came off the bench to grab a team-best eight rebounds.

USC Aiken was led by Brock's 20-point, 12-rebound double-double. Brock was a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line. Gus Rowland and Shaquan Jules added 14 points apiece and Damontez Oliver scored 13.

Up Next: The Hurricanes take a break for the holidays before returning home to host Lander University (8-2, 2-0 PBC) on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 3:30 p.m.
