Sweet Victory

AMERICUS, Ga. - One ended up being the lucky number Wednesday evening as the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team picked up their first victory of the 2012 season as the 'Canes shut out Brewton-Parker College 1-0 at Hurricane Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes punched in what proved to be the game winning goal in the 66th minute of the second half. Freshman forward Michael Corrigan took a pass from sophomore forward Joshua Manga on the right wing scoring over the outstretched arms of the Brewton-Parker keeper.

The Canes held on to the one goal advantage for the rest of the match despite BPC holding a 17-6 shots advantage, including a 7-2 SOG advantage, on the night.

Corrigan, who finished with a team high four shots, scored his third goal of the season for the Hurricanes. He is now tied for 8th in the conference in goals scored. Manga recorded his first assist on the season while senior goal keeper Cade Jones had a good defensive effort on the night with seven saves.

GSW improves to 1-3-1 on the season while Brewton-Parker drops to 2-3-1. The Blue & Gold hit the road for a two game road trip starting with a Peach Belt Conference match up against Lander University at 3:30 p.m. this Saturday followed by a Sept. 19 trip to Georgia Gwinnett.
