Tennis Splits With Middle Georgia

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams split a non-conference doubleheader with Middle Georgia State College on Wednesday afternoon at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex. The GSW men won 6-3 and the women lost 6-3.

Both GSW programs have records of 2-2.

Jake Koonce and Steven Blythe were victorious in both singles and doubles play. Koonce and Blythe paired to defeat Elliot Wharton and Nishanth Rebello at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Blythe followed with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4 over Tim Driessen and Koonce notched a win at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4 over Shem Alexis.

GSW claimed five of the six singles matches after losing two of three in doubles play.

On the women's side, Anneliese Leahy was a double winner. Leahy partnered with Jamie Thomas and earned the Lady 'Canes lone doubles victory, 8-4, at No. 3. She went on to defeat Cynthia Gordijn, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Victoria Ondo accounted for the other team point for GSW as she won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Hurricanes open Peach Belt Conference play on Friday against UNC Pembroke at 11 a.m. Both GSW programs host USC Aiken on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
