The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams dropped a pair of Peach Belt Conference doubleheaders against nationally-ranked opponents this past weekend. The men fell at No. 26 Flagler, 7-2, on Saturday and at No. 4 Armstrong, 9-0, on Sunday. The women lost 9-0 at No. 16 Flagler and 9-0 at the country's top-ranked team, Armstrong.
Both GSW programs return to action on Wednesday at Fort Valley State with matches at 1 p.m.
GSW MEN 2, (#26) FLAGLER 7
The Hurricanes challenged the Saints at No. 2 doubles where Steven Blythe and Joel Landis lost 8-5 against Willy Hasselberg and David Espinosa.
In singles action the Hurricanes picked up a pair of wins despite playing without their usual No. 1, Jake Koonce. Justin Ralston was victorious at No. 5 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) over Justen Louis. Freshman Andrew Greneker earned his first collegiate singles victory, a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 decision over Hunter Hutcheson at No. 6. Blythe was in a tight match at No. 2 singles, a 6-4, 6-4 loss against Espinosa.
GSW MEN 0, (#4) ARMSTRONG 9
The Hurricanes best showing in doubles came at No. 1 where Steven Blythe and Joel Landis lost 8-2 against 2nd-ranked Fernando Bogajo and Otakar Lucak.
In singles action the Hurricanes played for the second consecutive day without their usual No. 1, Jake Koonce. GSW's strongest match against the Pirates was at No. 3 where Abel Acuna-Moreno lost 6-4, 6-1 against Luca Cerin.
The GSW men drop to 3-13 this spring, 0-7 in PBC. Armstrong improved to 12-4, 5-0 PBC.
GSW WOMEN 0, (#16) FLAGLER 9
The Lady Hurricanes best showing in doubles came at No. 1 where Carly Cangelosi and Anna Kate Shaw lost 8-3 against Mary Jo Nanti and Thaisa Pereira.
Flagler had little trouble with GSW in singles play. The Lady Hurricanes best set came at No. 4 where Jamie Thomas dropped the first set 6-2 against Pereira before losing the second set 6-0.
GSW WOMEN 0, (#1) ARMSTRONG 9
The Lady Hurricanes suffered the same fate as 18 teams before them this season against the undefeated powerhouse Armstrong.
GSW faced a nationally-ranked opponent in six of the nine positions and could not manage more than a game in any one set against the Pirates.
The Lady Hurricanes drop to 4-13 this spring, 0-9 in PBC. Armstrong improved to 19-0, 9-0 PBC.
