Lady 'Canes use Long Ball to Split Doubleheader with Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Georgia Southwestern (13-9) used the help of the long ball in the second game of the day to ensure the split with Thomas University (4-4) Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1: Thomas 2, GSW 1

Georgia Southwestern's offense struggled to get anything going as the Lady Hurricanes' bats were stymied throughout the first game of the afternoon.

GSW found themselves trailing, 1-0, after three scoreless innings when the Lady Hurricanes tied up contest off an RBI groundout by Avery Purser in the top of the fourth inning.

A solo home run from TU's Brittany Mayhill in the bottom of the fifth was all the Nighthawks needed to escape with a 2-1 victory as Southwestern couldn't find anymore offense the rest of the way.

Purser paced GSW (12-9) with two hits and one RBI on the game.

Starting Southwestern pitcher Ashley Cavender (3-4) had a good outing on the mound but was credited with the loss as the sophomore only allowed two runs off five hits while striking out five for the Lady Hurricanes.

Game 2: GSW 12, Thomas 6

In the second game, the bats finally came alive for the Lady Hurricanes as GSW pounded Thomas, 12-6.

GSW lit up the scoreboard first off a Nellie Moore two-run home run in the second inning to give the Lady 'Canes the early, 2-0, advantage.

Thomas regained the lead as the Night Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning but the advantage was short-lived as Southwestern quickly struck back.

GSW scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning off a passed ball, an RBI single by Mason Moreland, an error, an RBI single by Hayley Knight, and a wild pitch as the Lady 'Canes regained the lead, 7-3.

Elliot Martin and Jordan Miller joined Moore in the home run club as both knocked one out of the park in the seventh inning as Georgia Southwestern cruised to a 12-6 victory.

Martin, Miller, Moore and Hayley Knight combined for seven hits and six RBIs on the contest for Southwestern.

Erin Vick (3-3) was credited with the win for GSW as the sophomore threw for 3.2 innings giving up five runs off four hits while striking out three.

Pastor (1) was credited with the save as the junior came in and tossed 3.1 innings giving up one run off one hit.

With nine home runs on the season, GSW (13-9) has already surpassed last year's total (7) just 22 games into the season.

Miller finished the day with three hits, two RBIs and a home run for the Lady 'Canes.

Georgia Southwestern will be back in action Friday, Mar. 1, as Fort Valley State comes to Lady 'Cane Field for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
