Lady Hurricanes Ice FVSU

AMERICUS, Ga. - On a crisp, chilly afternoon at Lady 'Cane Field, Georgia Southwestern iced the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State as the Blue and Gold allowed just three combined runs in the doubleheader as the Lady Hurricanes coasted to a pair of easy victories.

Game 1: GSW10, FVSU 1

Georgia Southwestern's starting pitcher Ashley Cavender (3-3) continued her strong play from the mound as the sophomore threw a complete game, allowing one run off five hits and striking out five Lady Wildcats.

While Georgia Southwestern's pitching stymied the FVSU offense, GSW's bats were red hot as Southwestern scored 10 runs off 10 hits including three home runs by three different players as the Blue and Gold went on to the easy six-inning, 10-1 victory.

Freshman Morgan Emerson hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the third inning to get the show started for the Lady Hurricanes.

Elliot Martin followed suit with a lead-off slam in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Jordan Miller's two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning finished off the GSW long ball trifecta and gave GSW (14-9) the victory in the first game of the day.

Game 2: GSW 13, FVSU 2

The second game followed in much of the same fashion as the first game as GSW accounted for 13 runs off 13 hits as Georgia Southwestern pounded Fort Valley State 13-2.

GSW found themselves down 2-1 early in the game but the Lady Hurricanes scored 12 runs in the third and fourth innings to coast for the easy, shortened victory.

Hayley Knight's three hit effort paced Southwestern while senior Janna Anderson accounted for four RBI's for the Lady Hurricanes.

Logan Smith (2-0) tossed a complete game as the senior gave up two runs off eight hits while striking out one Lady Wildcat.

Georgia Southwestern will be back in action tomorrow at Lady 'Cane Field as the Blue and Gold host UNC Pembroke in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams. The doubleheader action starts at noon.
