GSW Rebounds to Sweep Augusta State

AMERICUS - Following a pair of disheartening losses to Columbus State, Georgia Southwestern got back on track Saturday afternoon as they continued their late-season run towards post-season play by earning a sweep of Augusta State at Lady 'Cane Field.

Game 1: GSW 2, ASU 1

In the first contest of the day, Augusta State dented the scoreboard first as the Jaguars notched a run off a base hit by Lauren Yeargan to take the early advantage.

That lead proved to be the only one on the day for ASU (14-23, 5-6 PBC) as the Lady 'Canes scored a run in the home-half of the first inning to tie the score.

The game stayed knotted through the next three innings of play but an Avery Purser-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the game-winning run as GSW went on for the 2-1 victory.

Southwestern's starting pitcher Allison Pastor (11-7) was credited with the win as the junior threw a complete game allowing a single run off five hits with four strikeouts.

Mason Moreland paced GSW (23-22, 7-10 PBC) with a pair of hits as the junior went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases on the contest.

Game 2: GSW 6, ASU 2

Georgia Southwestern jumped out to the early 4-0 advantage through the first two innings of the second game of the day as Janna Anderson had an RBI-double to put GSW on the board in the first inning and Elliott Martin had hit a solo-home run in the second inning followed by a two Lady 'Cane-walks in a bases loaded situation that scored an additional two runs.

GSW added to their lead in the fourth inning when Allison Pastor and Rachel McElroy both had an RBI-single as Southwestern took a 6-0 advantage.

Augusta State (14-24, 5-7 PBC) lit up the scoreboard for the first time of the contest as the Jaguars punched in a pair of runs in the sixth inning but GSW went on for the sweep on the day with a 6-2 victory.

GSW (24-22, 8-10 PBC) had another strong pitching effort as Ashley Cavender (8-8) threw a complete game allowing a pair of runs off eight hits while striking out six Jaguars.

Martin led the offensive charge for the Lady 'Canes as the junior went 2-for-3 with one home run, the fourth of the season, and a pair of RBIs.

Georgia Southwestern will return to action Wednesday, April 3, as the Lady 'Canes take a break from conference play to travel to Brewton-Parker for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
