Senior Sweep

AMERICUS - Three Georgia Southwestern seniors who have helped the GSW program soar to new heights were appropriately sent out on a winning note Tuesday evening as the Lady Hurricanes swept Albany State on senior night at Lady 'Cane Field.

Game 1: GSW 3, ASU 2

Georgia Southwestern dented the scoreboard early in the first contest as RBI-singles from Hayley Knight and Nellie Moore gave GSW the early 2-0 advantage after the first inning of play.

Albany State climbed within a run in the third but the Lady 'Canes answered as Moore hit her sixth home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning as Southwestern regained the two-run advantage, 3-1.

ASU inched closer after notching a run off three hits in the fifth inning but GSW held the Lady Rams to just one hit the rest of the way in order to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

Southwestern's starting pitcher Logan Smith (3-1) earned her third win of the season as the senior capped off her final appearance at Lady 'Cane Field throwing for five innings while allowing a pair of runs off five hits with four strikeouts for GSW.

Pitcher Allison Pastor earned her first save of the season as the junior threw for two no-hit innings in relief effort.

Knight and Moore paced Southwestern's offense as the pair combined for four out of GSW's six hits with three RBI.

Game 2: GSW 6, ASU 1

The Lady 'Canes avoided the let-down in the second game of the evening as GSW scored six runs in the first two innings earning the 6-1 victory as well as the sweep on the season against Albany State.

Senior Avery Purser started the scoring as the Cochran, Ga. native had a sacrifice fly to put Southwestern on the board in the first inning.

GSW poured it on in the second inning as the Lady 'Canes punched in five runs off five hits in order to take the commanding 6-0 advantage.

A pair of seniors factored in heavily in the scoring tear as Janna Anderson had an RBI fielder's choice, while Purser hit a 3-RBI double to right field.

Albany State dented the scoreboard by notching a run in the third inning but GSW's lead was too much for the Lady Rams to overcome as Southwestern claimed the easy victory.

Hayley Knight (2-for-4) and Mason Moreland (2-for-2) led the hitting effort for the Blue & Gold while Purser contributed 4 RBI in her final appearance at Lady 'Cane Field.

GSW's starting pitcher Ashley Cavender (10-11) threw a complete game for the Lady 'Canes as the sophomore allowed one run off five hits with four strikeouts.

With two games remaining in the regular season, GSW is still in contention to earn their first Peach Belt Conference Tournament post-season bid since 2009.

In an historic season, Southwestern (29-25, 9-13) has already won an NCAA-era program-best 29 games.

GSW will look to add to that total Thursday when the Lady 'Canes end their regular season at West Georgia in doubleheader action starting at 2 p.m.
