Lady 'Canes Split With Tusculum On Opening Day

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwester softball team opened their season with a split with Tusculum College Saturday afternoon at Lady 'Canes Field.

GAME 1: GSW 4, TUSCULUM 10

Tusculum College took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off a home run. GSW tied it up in the fourth when Mikela Barlow doubled to bring in Ella Hawkins and Graysen Sanders.

Tusculum scored two more runs in both the fifth and six and brought home four in the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.

Hayley Tierce homered in the seventh inning bringing in Balrow to cut Tusculum's lead to six runs.

GSW finished with eight hits, four runs, four RBIs and zero errors.

Brittany Childs (L, 0-1) pitched six innings, allowed eight hits, six runs, walked three and struck out none.

Shannon Gibson pitched one inning and surrendered five hits and four runs.

GAME 2: GSW 11, TUSCULUM 4

Tusculum had a 4-0 lead after the top of the third. Allee Denney brought in Balrow to get GSW on the board in the fourth and the Lady 'Canes scored six in the fifth.

Denney singled to bring in Tierce and Barlow. Hannah McCain doubled to bring home Sabrina Sieber, Marylen Kennedy and Joshlyn Martin scored on a passed ball.

The Lady 'Canes weren't done yet and scored four more in the sixth. Martin doubled to bring home Tierce and Barlow. Denney doubled to bring in Martin and McCain singled to bring in Denney.

GSW finished with 13 hits, 11 runs and 11 RBIs.

Denney and McCain both recorded four RBIs.

Gibson (W, 1-0)  pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, four runs, walked one and struck out two.

The Lady 'Canes are away Friday for the Flagler Tournament in St. Augustine, Fla. They will play Florida Southern at 5:30 p.m. and the University of Tampa at 7:30 p.m.
