West Georgia Sweeps GSW

CARROLLTON, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern softball team is now 10-8 overall after losing a pair of games to West Georgia on Thursday at University Softball Field.

GAME 1: GSW 5, WEST GEORGIA 16

The Lady 'Canes were on the board early with a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Mikela Barlow scored off a single from Allee Denney, Joshlyn Martin scored off a walk and Denney scored off a single from Brittany Davis.

West Georgia had eight hits and scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first including a two-run double, a two-run triple and a three-run homer.

Ella Hawkins scored in the second off an error and West Georgia had another three-run homer in the bottom of the second and scored another run to take a 10-run lead.

Hayley Tierce scored in the fourth off another error and West Georgia had a two-run double to take the 11-run win in five innings.

Barlow was 2-for-2 at the plate. Denney, B. Davis and Emily Smith recorded RBIs.

GSW finished with six hits, five runs and five errors.

Kaley Sikes (L, 2-3) faced seven batters, allowed five hits, seven run and walked two.

Brittany Childs faced 26 batters, gave up six hits, nine runs, walked four and struck out one.

GAME 2: GSW 0, WEST GEORGIA 9

Barlow had the lone hit for GSW in Game 2 to keep West Georgia's pitcher from getting a no-hitter and a shutout.

West Georgia scored four runs in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth to end the game in five innings.

GSW finished with one hit and one error.

Shannon Gibson (L, 2-3) faced 25 batters, gave up 12 hits, nine runs and walked two.

The Lady 'Canes are home on Saturday for their first Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against The University of Montevallo at 2 p.m.
