GSW Opens Peach Belt Conference Play With Two Losses To Montevallo

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern softball team moved to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in the Peach Belt Conference after losing their doubleheader to the University of Montevallo (10-9, 2-0 PBC) Saturday evening at Lady 'Canes Field.

GAME 1: GSW 3, MONTEVALLO 13

Allee Denney scored in the second on a wild pitch to give the Lady 'Canes a one-run lead. Montevallo came back with a nine-run inning in the third to take a large leap.

Hayley Tierce hit her six home run of the season in the fifth and scored Mikela Barlow to put GSW six-runs behind.

Montevallo had a four-run homer in the sixth to take a 10-run lead and their defense was able to hold off GSW to end the game in six innings.

Rebekah Davis was 1-for-1 at the plate, Denney was 2-for-4.

GSW finished with six hits and three errors.

Hayley Tierce (L, 1-1) pitched 2.2 innings, gave up three hits, eight runs and walked four.

Brittany Childs pitched 2.2 innings, scattered seven hits, five runs, walked two and struck out one.

Shannon Gibson pitched .2 innings and gave up one hit.

GAME 2: GSW 5, MONTEVALLO 9

Montevallo came out swinging having three hits and two runs in the first inning. Tierce cut the lead in half with a single sending Ella Hawkins home.

The game was quiet until the fifth inning when Montevallo scored two more runs off a single to left center. Tierce scored off a single from Sabrina Sieber to cut the lead to two runs and Montevallo scored another run at the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.

The game went quiet again until the bottom of the seventh when R. Davis scored off an error and Sikes tied the game with a double down the right field line to score Sieber and B. Davis.

Montevallo scored four runs in the eighth inning and were able to keep GSW from scoring to take the win in extra innings.

Barlow, Sikes and R. Davis were 1-for-2 at the plate, Denney was 2-for-4.

GSW finished with 10 hits and no errors.

Shannon Gibson pitched 5.1 innings, gave up 11 hits, five runs, walked two and struck out four.

Sikes (L, 2-4) pitched 2.2 innings and scattered five hits, four runs, walked four and struck out one.

The Lady 'Canes are away on Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader against Fort Valley at 2 p.m.
