Palm Beach Atlantic Sails Past GSW

AMERICUS, Ga.- Joshlyn Martin went a combined 4-for-6 at the plate including a home run on Thursday in the Georgia Southwestern softball doubleheader loss to Palm Beach Atlantic at Lady 'Canes Field.

GSW is now to 12-12 overall while Palm Beach Atlantic improved to 15-10.

GAME 1: GSW 2, PALM BEACH ATLANTIC 3

Palm Beach Atlantic scored one run in the first inning and Tierce responded with a two-run homer to deep center field to score Mikela Barlow and take a one-run lead.

The Lady 'Canes held the one-run lead for five innings until Palm Beach Atlantic scored two runs at the top of the seventh and held off GSW's offense to come back and take the one-run win.

Sabrina Sieber and Martin were 2-for-3 at the plate.

GSW finished with six hits and one error.

Shannon Gibson (L, 4-3) faced 31 batters, struck out one, scattered six hits, three runs and walked three.

GAME 2: GSW 5, PALM BEACH ATLANTIC 9

Palm Beach Atlantic score one run in the first off a pass ball and scored three more in the second all off singles to take a four-run lead.

Martin hit a home run to start the bottom of the second and put GSW on the board. Barlow cut the lead in half when she singled to right field to score Graysen Sanders.

Palm Beach Atlantic scored their fifth run in the fourth off a double to left center. The Lady 'Canes had a big fifth inning scoring three runs to tie the game.

Barlow hit a double to left center to score Ella Hawkins, Tierce singled up the middle to score Barlow and Martin doubled to center field to score Tierce.

The game stayed tied through the seventh inning and went into extra innings which enforced the international tie breaker rule where the offensive team places a runner on second base. Palm Beach Atlantic recorded four hits and four runs to take a 9-5 lead in the eighth.

GSW's offense was once again held off and Palm Beach completed the sweep.

Barlow and Martin were 2-for-3 at the plate and Hawkins was 2-for-4.

GSW finished with nine hits and one error.

Kaley Sikes pitched five innings, faced 25 batters, struck out five and gave up six hits, five runs and walked four.

Brittany Childs (L, 6-3) pitched three innings, faced 16 batters, struck out one and scattered four hits, four runs and walked two.

The Lady 'Canes are away on Saturday to play a conference doubleheader against Columbus State starting at 1:00 p.m.
