Wolves Too Much For Lady Canes

AMERICUS, Ga. -- West Georgia swept a doubleheader from the Georgia Southwestern State University softball team Wednesday, taking 14-1 and 9-0 run-rule victories at Lady Canes Field.

The Lady Canes fell to 15-20 overall while West Georgia improved to 19-12 this spring.  

Game 1: Georgia Southwestern 1 West Georgia 14

The Wolves scored three runs in the first and three more in the third before tacking on eight runs in the fifth to seal the five inning run-rule victory. UWG combined for 16 hits off Madason Messer and Brittany Childs, led by Ashley Ellison and Alley Taylor with three hits a piece.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Hayley Tierce picked up the only GSW hit of the game in the fourth, lining a deep drive over the fence in center field for her 13th home run of the season.

Messer (6-2) took the loss for the Lady Canes after giving up three runs and two earned on four hits in the first inning. Katie Foote picked up her eighth win (8-2) for UWG after going five innings and giving up just the one run on one hit.  

Game 2: Georgia Southwestern 0 West Georgia 9

UWG jumped on the Lady Canes early again, scoring 6 runs in the second inning to take control of the game. The big blows came on a 2-run home run from Lexi Close and a 3-run homer from Peyton Stallworth off starter Ansley Dean.

The Wolves added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take the 9-0 lead.

UWG starter Raya Moncus held GSW without a hit through 4 ⅔ innings before Ansley Dean singled to right and end the no-hit bid for Moncus as she improved to 3-2 on the season. Dean took the loss for GSW, falling to 2-5 after giving up six runs on four hits.

Up Next: The Lady Canes return to conference play with a Friday matinee doubleheader at Augusta. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with the second game to follow at 2:00 p.m.
