AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team defeated the Shorter University Hawks on Wednesday night in both games of their double-header. The two wins bring GSW to 22-12 on the season winning four straight games. In the first game of the day, the Lady Canes' high-powered offense was slow to start, unable to score any runs in the first two at-bats of the first game. Shorter took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and the GSW offense answered in the bottom of the third with one run of their own. In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Canes bats came alive scoring five runs to make it 6-1 and then coming up in the next inning and scoring five to get the run-rule victory in the first game.
The second game of the night was a back and forth battle the entire way with four lead changes in the seven-inning battle. The Lady Canes jumped out to a four-run lead in the bottom of the second but Shorter would answer with a two-run inning in the third and a three-run inning in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the fourth. A Zoe Willis two-run home run in the fourth put the Lady Canes back in front but Taylor Phillips of Shorter answered with a two-run home run of her own to give the lead back to Hawks. A quick bottom of the fifth with nothing doing for the Lady Canes kept them down by one until a three-run bottom of the sixth when Jacie Johns singled up the middle to score the game-tying run and an error on a throw to third on a double steal allowed Kimmy Singer to come around for the game-winning run. Zoe Willis would add an insurance run with a SAC fly to right field scoring Jacie Johns.
The Lady Canes will host No. 13 North Georgia for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series on alumni weekend at Lady Canes Field.
