Lady Canes Come Up Short in #13 North Georgia Series

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern softball team lost their first Peach Belt Conference series of the year to 13th-ranked North Georgia. Saturday's doubleheader featured two close games with the Lady Canes having chances to upset the Nighthawks, but coming up just short in the first two contests. In the series finale, the GSW bats struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position failing to break into the run column for only the second time this season.

The first game of the three-game series was the closest game of the series with both teams having chances to win the game, the game took extra innings to decide and North Georgia scored their first run since the second inning in the top of the eighth. GSW was unable to answer in the bottom half giving the Nighthawks the 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon.

In the second game the Lady Canes took a 2-1 lead in the opening inning, North Georgia answered in a big way scoring at least one run in the next three innings and taking a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 4th. GSW answered with two runs of their own to bring the deficit down to just one run heading into the final innings of the second game of the doubleheader. Both offenses would remain quiet with GSW threatening in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on base. North Georgia would hold on not allowing the Lady Canes to capitalize on the opportunity, ending the contest with a 5-4 victory to clinch the series win. Jacie Johns was a bright spot on Saturday going two for three in both contests.

On Sunday afternoon the Lady Canes and Nighthawks faced off one last time with GSW looking to salvage the series and finish the weekend with a win. North Georgia pitching was phenomenal all afternoon with Kristen Davis (8-2) pitching seven shutout innings allowing only five hits.

The Lady Canes will look to rebound next weekend when they head on the road to face Flagler College for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series against the Saints.
