Lady Hurricanes Drop Tough Battle to USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. -- After a back and forth first half, the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball couldn't get the net popping in the third quarter, which eventually led to a 68-52 loss to USC Aiken inside The Convocation Center Saturday afternoon. 

The Lady Hurricanes are now on a four game losing streak after starting the season undefeated, averaging 80.3 points per game. Since their first loss of the season, GSW hasn't eclipsed 70 points. 

How It Happened: A Pacer three from Alex Canady gave them a 7-2 lead with 7:03 left in the opening quarter as USC Aiken started with an early lead. Morgan Towells put up four points to cut the lead down to one point but the Pacers insisted on keeping it. With 3:34 left in the first quarter, Lex Chatman drained one from deep to tie the game at 13. Both Towells and Tamecia Blue traded scores with the Pacers but Aiken was able to take a 19-17 lead going into the second quarter. 

Jamesha Samuel started the second quarter with a steal followed by a layup to quickly tie the game as the Lady Hurricanes took their first lead of the night, 23-19, with 8:30 remaining in the half. A shot by Kwajelin Farrar tied the game at 25 but Samuel responded with a back-to-back threes to help extend the lead for GSW (4-4, 0-2 PBC). With 2:30 left in the half, Farrar tied the game and gave USC Aiken their lead back as she converted a three-point play. Aiken held on as they took a 36-31 lead going into halftime. 

USC Aiken (5-5, 1-2 PBC) kept that same momentum coming out of halftime as they went on an 8-2 run, going up by 10 points, 42-32, midway through the third quarter. Aiken held GSW to only seven points in the third quarter as they took a 16 point lead going into the final 10 minutes. 

The Pacers took their largest lead, 66-43, in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hurricanes struggled to rebound and close the scoring gap. USC Aiken held a 50-33 rebound advantage over GSW as they also scored 40 points in the paint compared to GSW's 22. 

On the other end, the Lady Hurricanes forced 20 turnovers as that led to 14 points off turnovers. The Pacers shot 46.6 percent from the field while the Lady Hurricanes only shot 29.2 percent. USC Aiken also controlled the free throw percentage (75% - 55.6%) over GSW. 

Who Stood Out: The Lady Hurricanes were led by Chatman, who had two threes and she led with 13 points and four rebounds. Dominique Jeffery turned in 12 points with five rebounds and Samuel finished with 10 points and two steals. 

The Pacers were led by Farrar, who posted a double-double with 29 points and 17 rebounds. Melyk Taouil also picked up a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers in their first PBC win of the season.
