Patriots Use Big First Quarter to Win

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team got off to one of their slowest starts ever as Francis Marion used a double-digit first quarter lead that led to them a, 66-57, Peach Belt Conference win Monday evening inside the Storm Dome. 

After seven minutes into the opening quarter, Dominique Jeffery was able to get GSW on the board as she drained two free throws. 

How It Happened: Francis Marion opened the game with a 13-0 scoring run as GSW couldn't get anything to fall inside the rim. Jeffery put the only points on the board for the Lady Hurricanes as the rest of the team scored from the line in the opening quarter.

The second quarter went by slow for both teams, as GSW tried to catchup by FMU wanted to expand on the lead that they was holding. Both teams went on a three minute scoring drought before Tamecia Blue was able to end it as GSW was trailing, 30-13. The Lady Hurricanes ended the half on a good note with back-to-back three's by Yasmin Perez and Lex Chatman but FMU still held the lead, 36-21.

Midway through the third quarter, a layup by Chatman cut FMU's lead down to nine points, 38-29. Both teams started to trade scores while the Lady Hurricanes were trying to keep them from leading more than 10 points, and that they did. With 15 seconds left in the third, Samuel drained a three from deep as FMU took a 48-40 lead going into the final 10. 

With 2:25 left in the game, Jamesha Samuel drained back-to-back threes as GSW was able to cut the score down to two possessions, 60-55, with 1:40 remaining. However, the Patriots were solid from the free throw line as they took a 66-57 win to start the week. 

GSW (5-9, 1-7 PBC) shot a season low from the field, completing only 25.0 percent in shots. FMU shot 44.2 percent from the field along with a 76.2 free throw percentage compared to GSW's 67.9 percent. FMU (7-7, 3-5 PBC) also held a huge 51-33 rebounds advantage but the Lady Hurricanes forced 26 turnovers to end the game. 

Who Stood Out: Samuel led the Lady Hurricanes with 14 points as she came off the bench and drained four three's. Trimble led with eight boards to with her 11 points as Chatman finished with nine points. 

The Patriots were led by Zaria Woods, who ended with a double-double as she put up 20 points while getting 16 rebounds. Kiana Adderton added 15 points and eight rebounds .
