Third Quarter Run Not Enough for Lady Hurricanes

Third Quarter Run Not Enough for Lady Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Two Georgia Southwestern women's basketball players finished with a double-double during Wednesday's game against Peach Belt Conference foe Columbus State but that wasn't enough as the Cougars took a 76-68 win inside the Storm Dome.

Lex Chatman led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds followed by Mariya Trimble, who finished with 15 bench points and 12 boards for the Lady Hurricanes. GSW used a huge 28-point third quarter in hopes of a comeback but that wasn't the case as they could never recover the lead.

How It Happened: One minute into the opening quarter, Madison Johnson put GSW on the board with a layup and that was the last of the lead that the Lady Hurricanes saw. CSU tied the game and took the lead on back-to-back possessions as they went on a 15-0 run before Trimble was able to get GSW on the board as they trailed 15-4 with 4:12 left in the first. After trading possessions, the Cougars took a 24-11 lead going into the second.

With 8:35 left in the half, Chatman drained a three to cut the lead down to single-digits as CSU was still leading, 24-16. Unfortunately, that didn't last long as the Cougars extended on a 15-4 scoring run to go up by as much as 25 points, 47-22, with 1:24 remaining in the half. Trimble added a layup and Jamesha Samuel drained one from deep in attempts to cover the scaring as CSU was leading, 49-27.

Instead of shutting down, GSW opened the third with a quick 7-0 run sparked by Yasmin Perez three but CSU answered back with a short run of their own. Samuel entered the game and was 3-for-3 from behind the arc, as she took the Lady Hurricanes on 17-5 scoring run as GSW was able to cut the lead back down to single digits, 62-55, going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, GSW (6-11, 2-9 PBC) got as close of five points on two occasions but CSU (13-4, 8-3 PBC) held up strong on the defensive end as they didn't let the Lady Hurricanes get any closer. The Cougars had a commanding 46-37 rebound advantage on the night but the Lady Hurricanes shot 39.7 percent from the field as the Cougars only shot 37.5 percent. GSW had more turnovers, 23-21, but they controlled the game with 35 bench points.

Who Stood Out: Samuel also led as she drained four 3-pointers, finishing with 20 points. K'Shouri Hodge was dominate inside the paint with five blocks and two steals.

CSU was led by Leeaysia Williamson, who went 10-for-10 from the free throw line and finished with 22 points. Chrisalyn Boston finished with a team-high 16 rebounds followed by 10 points as Aujuna Dawkins picked up 11 boards, finishing with 12 points as both players had double-doubles on the night.

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes will travel north to play Francis Marion on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m.
