No. 17 UNG Topples GSW

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -- A rowdy crowd hyped up by a rowdy pep band led to the Georgia Southwestern women's basketball team falling on the road to No. 17 North Georgia by score of 74-56 during a midweek Peach Belt Conference match inside the Convocation Center. 

In just her fifth start of the season, Jamesha Samuel led and exceeded with her second 20-point plus scoring game with 21 points, finishing 4-of-9 from behind the arc. 

How It Happened: Tamecia Blue made back-to-back layups within the first two minutes of the opening quarter but shortly after that, the Nighthawks showed who they were. They responded with back-to-back threes but Samuel quickly answered with a three of her own to hush the crowd. UNG's Kara Groover responded back with another three to extend the lead that sparked an 11-2 run. The Nighthawks took a 19-13 lead going into the second. 

In the second, GSW was shut down as they was outscored 8-19 as they couldn't get anything to fall. After two seperate runs by UNG, they went into halftime up, 38-21. 

Samuel opened the third quarter with back-to-back three's followed by a quick layup as the Lady Hurricanes started out fast and was looking to close the gap. With 5:05 left in the third, Samuel drained another three to cut the lead down to 11 points as UNG still held the lead. Layups by Kayla Smith and Lex Chatman closed the scoring gap to nine points with 2:33 remaining in the third. Unfortunately, UNG was able to drain one from deep to increase thier lead going into the final 10 minutes. 

UNG (18-3, 11-2 PBC) exceeded in the second half, holding onto the double-digit lead as GSW (6-13, 2-11 PBC) fell on the road. UNG outshot GSW 54.2 to 35.0 percent from the field as they also finished, shooting 56.3 from behind the arc while GSW shot 25.0 percent. Both teams finished with 19 turnovers but UNG held a huge 40-27 rebound advantage to end the night.  

Who Stood Out: Blue finished with 10 points and three steals while Smith led with a team-high seven rebounds. 

UNG was led by Julianne Sutton, who finished with 24 points and five boards. Abby Hubert led with 11 points while Abbie Franklin finished with 10 points and eight boards. 

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes will host USC Aiken at home on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m.
