Middle Georgia Outshoots GSW In 5-2 Win

COCHRAN, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team suffered a 5-2 loss to Middle Georgia State Tuesday evening inside Nesmith Field as three first half goals gave the Knights the upper hand. 

Two first half goals and an on-goal by GSW (1-1) gave Middle Georgia a 3-0 lead going into halftime. MGA's Miagh Downey scored two first half goals, once in the 19th minute followed by another in the 10th minute to put her squad up 2-0. The Knights added another score off an on-goal in the 17th minute by the Lady Hurricanes to push the score up 3-0. 

MGA (4-1) started off the second half with a goal in the 36th minute by Anna Heronymus but GSW quickly answered. Alison Rugel scored her first goal of the year in the 31st minute as Geraldine Alvarez was credited with the assist for a Knights 4-1 lead. Vivien Grosser added the final score for MGA in the 21st minute as that secured their four-game win streak. With five minutes left in the game, Lizbeth Cervantes shot one right through the goalkeeper for a GSW score, finalizing the game at 5-2. 

Payton Johnson led the Lady Hurricanes as both of her shots landed on goal, followed by Emily Collum, who had two shots. Hannah Morrone finished the day with four saves while the Knight's Courtney Link had five. GSW was outshot, 18-9, as MGA also had one more shot on goal (8-7) than GSW. 

Up Next: The Lady Hurricanes will return home to host Spring Hill College on Saturday, Sept. 14 for a 7 p.m. match start.
