Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against 2nd-ranked Flagler in Intense Battle

AMERICUS, Ga. — Georgia Southwestern women's soccer gives the second-ranked Flagler College Saints one of its closest games of the season falling 4-2 at home Wednesday night. The Hurricanes scored first as Emma Carter (17') placed a beautiful shot right under the crossbar to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 early in the game. The Saints battled back and after a stout defensive performance from the Hurricanes the Flagler offense broke through and evened the match up in the 44th minute of the first half. The Saints added another just before halftime to end the first half with the Hurricanes trailing by one goal.

The second-half scoring started when Flagler, early in the second half, put one in the back of the net taking a 3-1 lead in the 50th minute. The Lady Canes showed their heart and earned a penalty kick in the 64th minute. Grace Grech stepped up and put it to the right of the keeper and cut the deficit to just one and put the pressure on the undefeated Saints. The Saints put the nail in the coffin late and scored in the 82nd minute surviving the upset the Hurricanes were trying to pull off at Hurricane Field.

The 4-2 loss is the closest result the women's soccer program has had versus Flagler since 2008 and adds to the growing signs of improvement the program has seen since the Coach Kerry Edwards era has begun.

The Lady Canes will head on the road next to take on Young Harris College at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2.
