MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team finished 11th of 13 teams at the Peach Belt Conference Championships hosted by Georgia College Saturday morning at the Council Farm Course. Ashleigh Owens paced the Lady Hurricanes by completing the 6K course in 24:53.6 for 46th place out of 105 competitors.
Katherine McGarr was the second runner to cross the finish line for GSW with a time of 25:21.7, good for 58th place while Lauren Ard was third for the Lady Hurricanes with a time 25:46.5, placing 70th overall. Connie Lewis finished 72nd at 25:57.4. Savannah Ross had a time of 26:20.2 to place 74th. Neeli Fortson finished 84th with a time of 26:51.6. Morgan Cambron-Miller crossed two slots behind Fortson. Mary Catharine Calcutt placed 95th.
GSW raced on the same course back on Sept. 10 to start its 2016 season. The Lady Hurricanes saw marked improvement in times across the board on Saturday. Cambron-Miller saw the biggest jump as she shaved 2:45 off her September time. Ross also took more than two minutes (2:10) off her pace. McGarr (1:16) and Ard (1:05) were over a minute better with Fortson (0:59) and Calcutt (0:58) just shy of the one-minute mark. Lewis (0:43) and Owens (0:40) were significantly faster as well.
The University of Montevallo placed four runners in the top five and five in the top seven in a dominating win for its third straight PBC Championship. With 19 points, Montevallo posted the lowest total in PBC history and their 61-point margin over North Georgia becomes the largest winning margin. GSW was seven points shy of ninth place Clayton State.
Cheyenne Thompson from Montevallo crossed the finish line in 21:43.8 to win the race.
The Lady Hurricanes return to action Nov. 5, when they head to Montevallo, Ala. for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
