Cross Country Opens 2017 Season With 7th Place Finish

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Senior Ashleigh Owens led the Georgia Southwestern State University cross country team Friday evening at Freedom Park in the Valdosta State University Border Clash. Owens completed the 5K course in 21:12.2 for 38th place out of 82 competitors.

Junior Katherine McGarr posted a time of 22:29.8 to place 54th. Sophomore Connie Lewis was the third GSW runner across the line, placing 60th in 23:17.5.

Savannah Ross (26:56.9) and newcomers Cassidy Burton (30:34.0), Elizabeth Wills (32:13.1), Erica Day (32:44.0) and Cymone Pauley (49:45.0) followed for the Lady Hurricanes. 

Finishing with 39 points, the University of Tampa took home the team title. The champs had four runners finish in the Top 10 of the individual standings to distance themselves from runner-up Georgia College (72).

Katherine Yost from Georgia College crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 18:09.2 to win the event.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Sept. 9 when they head to Macon, Ga., for the Middle Georgia State University Invitational.
