Sports Medicine

Georgia Southwestern State University's Sports Medicine staff is driven to provide comprehensive medical care with an evidence‐based foundation and patient‐centered focus. The emphasis of the program is placed on injury prevention, and the primary goal is to ensure that all student‐athletes are healthy, able to compete and educated on lifelong wellness.

The Sports Medicine staff is assisted by a network of  highly qualified team physicians, all of whom are dedicated to providing the best possible care to GSW's student‐athletes. This healthcare service includes the care of all minor and emergency injuries, treatment and rehabilitation of all injuries, health and nutrition counseling, as well as overall conditioning of the student‐athletes.

The Athletic Training Clinic is located in the Storm Dome adjacent to the basketball locker rooms within the Student Success Center, which opened in the spring 2006.

The Athletic Training Clinic is open one hour before every practice and two hours before every game, closing 30 minutes to an hour after each event. The Athletic Training Clinic is open for rehab and treatment Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday-Sunday hours are dependent upon game and practice schedules.

Available modalities include various therapeutic exercises, manual techniques, cryotherapy, heat therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation for pain control and muscle reeducation, as well as compression therapy and hydrotherapy. The treatment and rehabilitation area was expanded to allow more room to work and includes a stationary bicycle, upper body ergometer, mini‐trampoline with medicine balls, and several other rehabilitation instruments.

The Sports Medicine staff works closely with Georgia Southwestern's student‐athletes and coaches to decide the most appropriate treatment. To assist in medical decisions GSW Sports Medicine utilizes team physicians as well as other local healthcare professionals.
