AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern tennis teams combined to place a league-best five players on the recently released 2012 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic squads. Juniors Mollie McGowan and Ryan Bartz, along with sophomores Chris Eastwood, Stephen Moore and Matt Vansant earned the honor.
It was the second-consecutive All-Academic tennis award for McGowan and Bartz.
McGowan played No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles this spring for the 8-13 Lady Hurricanes. The Americus native finished with a 5-14 singles record and a 6-14 doubles mark while helping the squad earn its most PBC wins in a season. A two-sport athlete, she was named to the 2011 PBC All-Academic Women's Cross Country First Team in the fall.
In addition, McGowan was named the 2011-12 GSW Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and she recently earned induction into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.
In the classroom, the exercise science major holds a 3.95 grade point average.
Bartz finished 2012 with a 5-11 record at No. 2 doubles for the 5-14 Hurricanes. The Dixon, Ill. native saw time at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles as well this spring and tallied a 4-14 mark overall.
The biology & biomechanical engineering major holds a 3.39 grade point average.
Moore played in 18 matches for GSW in 2012. The Valdosta native had a 4-14 record at No. 1 singles while winning his only match at No. 2. He teamed with Eastwood at No. 3 doubles where they were 4-1. Overall, Moore was 6-7 in doubles, splitting time at No. 2 and No. 3.
A chemistry major, Moore holds a 3.79 grade point average.
Eastwood played in 11 matches in 2012. He posted a 5-6 record at No. 3 doubles.
The native of Chester, England is a computer science major and holds a 3.86 grade point average.
Vansant played in 13 matches this spring for the Hurricanes. The Leesburg native posted a 1-4 record at No. 5 singles and was 1-12 overall while recording a 3-5 mark in doubles. Vansant received the 2012 GSW Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete Award (top GPA).
The business major holds a 3.88 grade point average.
The All-Academic Team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; have achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and have completed at least one full academic year at her current institution.
