AMERICUS - A four-run second inning paced the Thomas University (Ga.) baseball team in a 7-2 win over Georgia Southwestern at Hurricane Stadium on Tuesday.

The loss is the eighth straight for a GSW squad that continues to struggle at the plate. Southwestern (1-9) could muster only three hits against Thomas, with two coming in the 'Canes two-run seventh inning. Thomas, on the other hand, belted out 13 hits and improved its record to 8-5 this spring.

GSW entered Tuesday's matchup with all the momentum in the series, having won seven of the last eight meetings between the schools.

TU collected five hits, including a double by Brett White, to put GSW in a 4-0 hole early. A pair of singles and a GSW error in the third helped the Night Hawks extend the advantage to 5-0.

A leadoff walk and two more singles in the fifth put the Night Hawks ahead 6-0 and a final run in the seventh gave TU a seven-run lead.

John Duran opened the GSW seventh with a double and Michel Coffey followed with a single to start the Hurricanes rally. A botched double play attempt allowed Duran to score on the next at bat as Gabby Ramirez reached first and Coffey advanced to second. After a strikeout, Beau Parker walked to load the bases and all runners proceeded to advance when a wild pitch allowed Coffey to score. Another walk loaded the bases once again with one out, but the rally fizzled there as reliever Jacob Davis struck out the next to batters to end the inning.

GSW starter Matthew Suggs (0-3) pitched 4 1/3 innings and surrendered six runs on nine hits. He struck out eight and walked one. Hunter Thompson allowed a run in his 2 2/3 innings of work while striking out two. Justin Lott and Gray Carden each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

Ben Overman (1-0) threw 6 1/3 innings for Thomas and struck out nine. He walked two and held GSW to three hits. Davis and Trent Stoker struck out two apiece and combined for 2 2/3 innings of near-perfect relief.

The Hurricanes did not have a batter record multiple hits.

Joey Kampfer and Jesse Piccolo tallied three hits apiece for TU. Sergio Delgado collected two hits and drove in two.

Southwestern travels to Albany State on Thursday for a 3 p.m. game with the Golden Rams.
