Bamboozled by Bobcats; GSW Loses 10-2

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team's two-game winning streak came to a screeching hault Friday evening at Hurricane Stadium as Georgia College took Game 1 of the three-game Peach Belt Conference series, 10-2.

Georgia College scored in all but two innings to improve to 21-14 overall and 12-6 in Peach Belt Conference play. GSW dropped to 8-28 and 5-16 in the PBC.

The Bobcats jumped on GSW right out of the gate. GC opened the game with two runs in the first, one of which was aided by an error, and followed with a run in the second.

Another two-run, one-run inning combination followed in the fourth and fifth frames for GC. After pushing a run across in the seventh, the Bobcats went with a final two-run, one-run inning combo to close the ballgame.

GSW broke up the Bobcat shutout in the eighth when two walks, two singles and an error led to a pair of Hurricane runs. Randall Sheffield drove in GSW's first run of the night with a deep single to left field and Chase Young followed on the next play with a sacrifice fly to the center fielder.

Sheffield led Hurricane hitters with a 3-for-4 evening. Young added two hits.

Josh Young, Jeremy Donaldson and Bryce Williams had two hits apiece for GC. Both of Donaldson's hits were doubles.

GSW starter Matthew Suggs (2-7) was unable to get out of the fourth, throwing 3 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and five runs, although only two were earned. Suggs walked four and struck out one. Tyler Daniel pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and surrendered a run while walking one and striking out four. Gray Carden and Ryan Mosley shared the final three frames.

Darin Wiltgen (6-1) threw eight innings for GC. He allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out four. Chris George pitched the final inning and fanned two Hurricane batters.

The two schools meet again tomorrow (Sat.) for an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
