GSW Unable To Douse Blazers

VALDOSTA, Ga. - An eight-run eighth inning by Valdosta State was too much for the Georgia Southwestern baseball team to overcome on Sunday afternoon in a 14-5 loss at Billy Grant Stadium.

GSW's record dips to 1-1 on the season while Valdosta State improves to 2-0.

The Blazers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. They added a run in the fifth inning, another in the sixth and two more in the seventh before stretching the advantage to 14-1 in the eighth.

Southwestern put together back-to-back singles to open the top half of the eighth inning and sophomore Devyn Newberry eventually came around to score putting the Hurricanes on the board.

Freshman Gabe Selochan delivered a RBI single for GSW in the ninth. Valdosta State walked in a pair of runs before senior Jarrod Taylor brought home the final Hurricane run with a sacrifice fly.

GSW senior Matthew Suggs (0-1) took the loss in his 2014 debut. Suggs allowed three runs over 4 2/3 innings. He surrendered six hits, walked two and struck out five. Zac Wittmus came on for 2 1/3 innings of relief. Earl Dupree pitched 2/3 of an inning before Justin Barnes entered to record the final out.

Valdosta State starter Dominic DeMasi did not factor into the decision despite throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innnings and registering four strikeouts. Colby Wisdom (1-0) followed with 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits. Ethan Bornstein, Mitch King and Matt Moses covered the final two frames.

Josh Sanders reached base in all four plate appearances for the Hurricanes after finishing 2-for-2 with two walks. Neal Chambless collected two hits.

Bryant Hayman went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs to lead the Blazers. Matthew Fears added three hits, including a pair of doubles.
