AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern baseball took on Flagler College on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader. The Hurricanes split the day with fellow Peach Belt Conference opponent the Flagler Saints. Sunday was also the day Georgia Southwestern recognized their seven baseball seniors before the first pitch was thrown.
Family and friends came from all over to recognize the seniors for all their hard work and dedication; and acknowledge all they have accomplished over their time at GSW.
GAME 1: FC 3 GSW 1
With a quick one run lead by Flagler, GSW was still in the game when Devyn Newberry hit a double down the right line to start the bottom of the third. Evan Alderman was able to hit a bunt that allowed both himself and Newberry to advance. Sanders hit a single to the shortstop allowing Newberry to bring in the only run of the game.
Flagler's Andrew Brodbeck broke the tie during the ninth inning when he hit a homerun over right field, bringing in himself and another runner.
Senior Matthew Suggs (3-5) takes the loss after allowing pitching 8.1 innings of his senior game. Suggs allowed ten hits and three runs. Earl Dupree made an appearance to finish the last inning.
Flagler's Danny Brown (3-3) takes credit for the win after pitching a complete game with only one run and eight hits.
GAME 2: FC 4 GSW 5
The Hurricanes were able to break their nine game losing streak in game two. Things were not looking good for the Hurricanes after being down 4-0 after the top of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, seniors Josh Sanders and Stephen Eldridge made it on base. Senior Jarrod Taylor hit a single up the left field to bring in the first run of game two. After two quick outs, senior Corey Benson hit a single to right center bringing in another runner. Devyn Newberry finished the job by hitting a double to bring in Taylor, Benson, and Les Cromer. In one inning the Hurricanes had five runs, off four hits, and two errors were made by Flagler.
Senior Neal Chambless and Newberry went 2-of-3 in hitting, during game two.
Zac Wittmus (1-8) takes credit for the win after pitching eight innings. Wittmus struck out seven of the 37 batters faced, only giving up 11 hits and four runs. Earl Dupree is credited with his first save of the season as he pitched the final inning striking out two of the three batters faced.
Flagler's Jake Brandenberger (5-3) takes credit for the loss after pitching in seven innings giving up five runs and eight hits. Chris Patrick made an appearance for an inning and gave up one hit.
Freshman Evan Alderman has a hit in 21 of his last 23 games and his season batting average has continued to .392.
Devyn Newberry hit two doubles for the day and accomplished one stolen base.
The Hurricanes finish the series play with Flagler on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Hurricane Field. This will be the last home game for the Hurricanes regular season.
