Tatnall Shines In Season Finale

Tatnall Shines In Season Finale

AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern senior Josh Tatnall left it all on the baseball field.

In Monday's season finale, Tatnall went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and on his final collegiate at bat he delivered a shot over the left field fence. Not a bad way to finish a career.

Despite the efforts of the Newark, Del. native, GSW suffered an 8-4 loss to Francis Marion at Hurricane Stadium.

GSW finishes the season with a record of 13-34 overall and 4-26 in the Peach Belt Conference. Francis Marion improved to 28-17, 16-12 in the PBC.

The Patriots did the brunt of their damage in the second inning when they rolled six hits - including three doubles - and two walks into seven runs.

With Southwestern trailing 8-1 in the sixth inning, Devyn Newberry brought home Tatnall on a sacrifice fly.

Will Redding drove in Brett Burgess for the Hurricanes third run of the game on a RBI single in the seventh.

Tatnall put his final stamp on the season with the solo blast off the batting cage beyond the left field fence in the eighth.

Burgess wrapped up his first season with the Blue & Gold on a high note, going 3-for-3 with a double to finish the spring with a team-leading .318 batting average. Devyn Newberry singled in the fourth inning to end the season on a 12-game hitting streak. The Hurricanes outhit FMU, 11-9, on Monday.

J.D. Crowe led FMU at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Crowe had a double and two RBIs. Ryan Miller added two hits.

GSW starting pitcher Dylan Brown (1-3) was unable to get out of the second inning. Kyle Spinks gave a yeoman's effort in relief, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits, walked one and struck out four. Coty Graham held FMU scoreless over the final two innings with one hit and one strikeout.

FMU starter Daniel Barfield (4-2) went 7 1/3 innings, allowed 10 hits and all four GSW runs, walked two and struck out six. Brandon Cook kept the Hurricanes in check over the final 1 2/3 innings.
