'Canes Remain Perfect In Non-Conference Play

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Junior outfielder Evan Alderman went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Georgia Southwestern to a 9-6 win over Valdosta State University on Wednesday evening in non-conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field.

GSW improved its record to a perfect 10-0 this spring in non-conference play, 10-6 overall, while Valdosta State fell to 11-6 overall.

The Hurricanes broke open a scoreless game in the third inning when they led off the frame with three consecutive singles to load the bases and proceeded to push across two runs via walks. The final run of the rally scored on a ground out.

Valdosta State quickly responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

Devyn Newberry belted a RBI single in the fourth to lead another three-run frame for GSW and put the Hurricanes on top, 6-3. It was a lead they would not relinquish.

After ripping a two-out double in the sixth, Alderman made the most of a VSU fielding error and scored to put GSW ahead, 7-3.

The Hurricanes wrapped up their scoring with a two-out rally in the seventh capped by a Zach Barron two-run double to left center that scored Davey King and Josh Logan.

VSU cut the margin in half and rounded out the scoring with three runs in the eighth.

The top of the lineup came through for GSW as leadoff batter Newberry was 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored to join the No. 2 hitter, Alderman, for a combined 7-for-10 evening. Barron showed why he's leading the team in batting average (.392) as he went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Tyler York was one of three VSU batters to finish with multiple hits. York was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Dalton Duty and Marcus Sigmon added two hits apiece.

GSW used four different pitchers in the game. Starter Dylan Brown did not factor into the decision. Brown threw three innings, walked two and struck out two. He surrendered six hits and three earned runs. Reliever Mitch Holloway (1-1) picked up his first win of the season after throwing three scoreless innings. Holloway was impressive as he fanned five and held VSU to one hit to improve his season ERA to a team low 1.64. Chad Adkins surrendered three runs during his 1 1/3 innings on the hill and Kyle Spinks closed the door on a Blazer comeback with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his third save of the spring.

VSU trotted eight different hurlers to the mound. Roman Donofro (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing the Hurricanes to take the lead for good in the fourth inning.

Southwestern travels to USC Aiken on Friday to resume Peach Belt Conference play with the weekend series opener at 6 p.m.
