Patriots are undefeated no more

Trailing by two at the half, GSW shot 59 percent over the final 20 minutes to knock Francis Marion from the ranks of the unbeaten 92-79, Saturday afternoon at the Storm Dome in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The Hurricanes (5-4, 1-1 PBC) came out ice cold, missing their first eight shots and 11 of their first 12 from the field to fall behind 13-4 after six minutes of action.  Francis Marion (8-1, 1-1 PBC) eventually built an 11 point lead (26-15) with nine minutes remaining in the half.

An 8-1 GSW run to end the first half left the Hurricanes down by only two at the break despite shooting 30 percent (9-of-30) in the opening stanza.

A pair of baskets pushed FMU ahead 44-38 just after intermission, but GSW connected on their next seven shots during a 17-2 run that put the Hurricanes ahead for good.

A three-pointer by Evan Mobley would swell Southwestern's lead to 12 points at 67-55 with 11:21 left, but Francis Marion rallied to trail only 74-72 with 5:55 on the clock.

The ‘Canes would score the next nine points off of seven free throws and a Damayrius Adside jumper to seal the victory.

Southwestern connected on 17-of-29 field goal attempts and 15-of-19 free throws over the final 20 minutes.

Chris Rawls and Adside led GSW with 23 and 22 points respectively. Rawls was 15-of-18 from the free throw line. Marcus Scott added 18 points.  Mobley and Anthony Sargent finished with 11.

Matt French led the Patriots with 19 points. Anthony Wallen scored 14 points, followed by Sam Smith with 11 and Brynjar Bjornsson with 10.

FMU committed 31 fouls, had three players foul out, and sent GSW to the free throw line 41 times (33 makes).

Both teams committed only eight turnovers apiece.

Southwestern is back in action on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game at Columbus State.
