Mobley scores 24 in win over Lander

A strong second half led the Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team to a 70-63 victory over Lander University on Saturday afternoon at the Storm Dome. The Hurricanes shot 64 percent from the floor and 88 percent from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes.

The 63 points was the lowest total by a Hurricane opponent this season.

Neither side was able to lead by more than three points over the first nine minutes and 30 seconds of the game. However, it was the visiting Bearcats who built a 26-19 advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the first stanza.  Southwestern's Anthony Sargent hit a layup at 1:25 to complete the scoring heading into the break.

The Hurricanes regained the lead with with 14:50 remaining in the contest (33-32). After the teams exchanged baskets, Lander held the lead for the last time after a Curtis Milner layup made the score 36-35. Southwestern's Evan Mobley answered with a three point basket to start a 13-2 run for GSW.

Lander (8-9, 4-7 PBC) would pull within four points (55-51) before the Hurricanes would connect on 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

GSW (8-11, 4-8 PBC) held a 14-2 points off turnover advantage in the second half.

Mobley finished with a game-high 24 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and a 7-of-8 night from the free throw line.  Chris Rawls posted his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Marcus Scott chipped in 12 points.

Milner had 17 points for Lander and Brenton Harris added 11.

GSW is back in action on Wednesday, hosting No. 12 Armstrong Atlantic at 7:30 p.m. The Hurricanes will retire number 42 to honor former standout Willy Mathis before the game.
