Marcus Scott scored 22 points - four coming off free throws in the final 45 seconds - to lead the Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team to a 65-62 win over Armstrong Atlantic State at the Storm Dome on Thursday evening.
GSW jumped out to a 16-8 advantage, capped off by a Ric Roderick three-point basket at the 9:51 mark of the first half.
Hurricane shooters were held without a field goal over the next four minutes as AASU eventually tied the game at 19-19.
The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the first half and AASU led 30-29 at the break.
Armstrong Atlantic built a seven-point advantage (42-35) after Keron McKenzie converted the free throw on a rare four-point play with 13:15 left in the game.
Five minutes later, Scott put an exclamation point on a 14-2 Hurricanes run as he soared down the lane and threw a one-handed dunk over the AASU defense (see story photo).
The ‘Canes extended the lead to eight points (61-53) with 2:23 remaining.
The Pirates would not go away and a 9-2 run brought the visitors within a point (63-62) with 43 seconds left.
Scott proceeded to drain four consecutive free throws to give Southwestern their second Peach Belt win of the season - the first at home.
GSW finished the game shooting 46.5 percent from the floor (20-of-43) and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the charity stripe. Armstrong Atlantic was held to 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor - getting off 17 more shots than the Hurricanes - and 61.5 percent from the free throw line (8-of-13).
GSW outrebounded Armstrong Atlantic (39-29), but committed 13 more turnovers (21-8).
Evan Mobley added 16 points for the Hurricanes. Chris Rawls posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Patrick Shokpeka scored 16 points for Armstrong Atlantic (8-15,
3-11 PBC). Gabriel Robinson chipped in 13 points. Keron McKenzie
added 12.
GSW (6-16, 2-10) goes for back-to-back wins on Saturday against
Flagler in the Storm Dome for Homecoming 2010. Tip is at 7:30 p.m.
