Augusta State wins battle of division leaders

AUGUSTA - George Johnson connected on three-consecutive three-pointers, sparking a 13-0 second half run that sparked No. 3 Augusta State to a 68-59 victory over No. 18 Georgia Southwestern in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.

The two sides exchanged the lead eight times over the opening 14 minutes, before ASU went on a 10-0 run to go on top 27-18.

The Jaguars led 29-23 at the half.

GSW chipped away at the margin over the opening nine minutes of the second period, regaining the lead momentarily, 45-44.

That's when Johnson took over, scoring nine unanswered points and triggering the run that proved to be too much for the Hurricanes to overcome.

ASU's biggest lead of the game was 16 points (62-46) and came with 5:35 to play.

Trayce Macon led the Hurricanes with 14 points. Colin Slotter chipped in 12. Phillip Brown added his seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Johnson finished with 17 points to lead ASU. Ben Purser tallied 16.

The Jaguars shot 52.3 percent from the floor, including 69.2 percent from beyond the arc. GSW finished with a 40.4 field goal percentage.

ASU (18-1, 8-1 PBC) outscored the Hurricanes in the paint, 20-8. 

Southwestern (13-4, 6-2) returns to action on Saturday at Lander.
