Second Half Blues Continue

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team held the lead over the University of Montevallo for over 24 minutes on Saturday afternoon, but the final six minutes belonged to the visiting Falcons as GSW suffered a 67-63 loss in the Storm Dome.

It was the Hurricanes second-consecutive defeat when they held the lead at halftime (5-2) as they fall to 5-5 overall, 0-3 in the PBC while Montevallo improves to 7-6, 3-0 in conference play.

Montevallo controlled the opening six minutes as well, as the Falcons jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Hurricanes quickly recovered from what would be their largest deficit of the afternoon with a 7-0 run behind back-to-back buckets from Darius Redding and a 3-pointer by Kevin Burnell. After Ryan May stopped the run with a jumper for Montevallo at the 12:49 mark, GSW regained the lead with a 3-pointer from Redding and held the advantage the rest of the half. A 3-pointer by Damien Leonard with 9:06 left before the break gave GSW its largest lead of the game, 11 points, at 23-12. Southwestern led 35-29 at halftime.

Montevallo tied the game at 40-40 with a layup from Larry Slaughter but the Hurricanes clawed their way back on top and eventually opened a seven-point lead, 53-46, capped by a steal and breakaway dunk from Redding with 12:05 to play.

GSW held off the Falcons for the next three minutes and the Hurricanes led 55-50 with 9:07 remaining.

That's when the reigning PBC Player of the Year decided to take over. Troran Brown scored 10 points down the stretch and dished out an assist as Hurricane shooters went cold. GSW missed six of its last seven attempts from beyond the arc to aid the Montevallo comeback.

Montevallo finished with a higher shooting percentage (50.9%) than GSW (48.9%) and won the rebounding battle, 30-25, although the Falcons came in with a league-best plus-8.8 rebounding margin. The Hurricanes turned the ball over eight more times, 15-7. Despite missing those 3-pointers in the closing minutes, the Hurricanes finished 10 of 21 overall (47.6%) from long range.

Leonard scored 15 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Hurricanes. Deric Rudolph made 3 of 6 from long range en route to his 13 points. He added three assists and four rebounds. Redding scored 14 points and dished out three assists.

Brown and Slaughter combined for 27 of Montevallo's 38 second half points. Brown finished with a game-high 22 points and four assists. Slaughter scored 15 behind 7 of 8 shooting and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
