Sweet Game From Burnell Sparks GSW Victory

FLORENCE, SC- The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team (13-10, 8-8 PBC) have won five out of their last six games after defeating Francis Marion (13-12 , 5-11 PBC) 85-74 Saturday night in the Smith University Center.

GSW captured more then a win Saturday night as three of their men made career accomplishments. Kevin Burnell put up a career high of twenty points. Darius Redding moved into second for most assists in one season at GSW with 112. Redding had nine assists in Saturday's game and is fifteen away from breaking the school record with three regular season games left to do so. Deric Rudolph broke the GSW school record for most 3-pointers in one season with a new total of 92. The old record of 88 was held by Anthony Sargent from the 2007-08 team.

Rudolph started the game out for GSW with two 3-pointers back to back to lead the game 6-2. Josh Birchfield put in a lay up followed by Burnell with a 3-pointer and Carlton Geathers with a dunk to take the lead by eight. Rudolph put in a 3-pointer followed by Darius Hoisten with his own 3-pointer and Cameron Venus had a dunk to give GSW a ten point lead with 7:33 left in the first. Burnell made another 3-pointer to take a thirteen point advantage and then Redding put in a free throw followed by Rudolph with a lay up and 3-pointer to make it a nineteen point lead with 2:28 to go. Burnell made it a twenty point lead with a lay up and Francis Marion put in a 3-pointer and a lay up to close the gap by five. GSW shot 58.6% in the first half and lead 46-31 going into the second half.

Like Deja Vu GSW started the second with two 3-pointers both from Damien Leonard. Leonard followed up with a lay up to lead by twenty one points. With 14:22 on the clock Burnell put in a 3-pointer followed by Redding with a lay up and Birchfield with two free throws to lead 65-47. With 9:40 to go Birchfield, Redding and Venus all made lay ups in a row to take a twenty two point advantage. The last 1:28 consisted of free throw after free throw. Burnell put in five and Venus put in two to help GSW capture the win over the patriots 85-74.

GSW out shot Francis Marion 49.2% to 42.4% and out rebounded them 38-34.

The Hurricanes largest lead was 24 points.

GSW is home on Wednesday for Senior Night to host Young Harris College at 7:30 p.m.
