Big Second Half From Price And Watson Can't Close Gap

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Georgia Southwestern sophomore guard Devin Watson topped his career-best scoring night in one half on Monday evening as he poured in 16 points over the final 20 minutes at Emmanuel College, but it wasn't enough to help the Hurricanes overcome a seven-point halftime deficit and GSW fell, 83-73, in the Shaw Athletic Center.

The Hurricanes dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 1-5 this season, while Emmanuel notched its third straight win and improved to 7-4.

It was a back-and-forth affair for the opening seven minutes as GSW trailed by a point, 11-10, with 12:49 to go in the half before Tyrone Wooten knocked down a jumper to put the Hurricanes on top and spark a 9-0 run. Wooten capped the run with another jumper at the 9:19 mark to give GSW its largest lead of the night, 19-11.

Emerson McClung scored on Emmanuel's next three possessions and helped cut the GSW lead in half, 22-18, with 7:48 remaining before the break. From there the Lions went on a 10-2 run to regain the lead and used the final five minutes to stretch its advantage to seven points, 36-29, at the half.

GSW slowly chipped away at the deficit and pulled within four, 56-52, after a jumper from Brandon Price with 10:28 to play, but that's as close as the Hurricanes could get. Emmanuel answered with a 13-2 run to put game out of reach.

The Lions won the battle on the boards, 29-22, and doubled up the Hurricanes on assists, 18-9. Emmanuel shot a sizzling 57.7 percent from the floor and sank 9 of 19 (47.4 percent) from beyond the arc, while GSW was solid at the charity stripe (11 of 14) and drained 10 3-pointers.

Price scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the second half. Watson finished with 19 points - after hitting 6 of 9 from the floor in the second period, including 3 of 4 from long range - and Wooten added 18, along with a team-high six rebounds.

Emmanuel was led by McClung's game-high 24 points. McClung made 8 of 11 shot attempts and all six of his free throws. McClung and Zach Vess pulled down a team-best six rebounds. Zach Lillie and Austin Green chipped in 13 points.

The Hurricanes return home to host Fort Valley State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
