Road Woes Continue In Double Overtime Setback

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team suffered an 83-78 double overtime defeat Friday evening against Lander University in Finis Horne Arena.

GSW remains winless (0-6) on the road this season and fell to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in Peach Belt Conference action, while Lander snapped a six game losing skid to improve to 4-9 while picking up its first win in PBC play (1-3).

The Hurricane offense was firing on all cylinders in the opening session as GSW shot over 50 percent from the floor for only the second time in a half this season. Coach Ben Hick's crew drilled 10 of 19 from beyond the arc, led by as many as 11 points and took a 43-34 lead into the halftime break.

Lander scored the first six points of the second half and stayed on GSW's heels until the final minutes of regulation. The Hurricanes held on to their lead until the 3:50 mark when a pair of Rahu Purdie free throws put the Bearcats ahead momentarily, 57-56. Cameron Clayton quickly answered with a jumper and GSW led until Purdie made one of two from the line with 17 seconds left to force overtime.

Neither side could pull away in the first extra session and the teams exchanged free throws in the closing minute to send the game to a second overtime.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Lander with under two minutes to play erased a one-point GSW lead and paced the Bearcats to the win.

The Hurricanes won the battle on the boards for only the second time this season (44-43), made more shots (29-26), and hit more 3-pointers (13-8), but Lander held a substantial edge in free throws made (23-7) and bench points (24-5).

In a span of 24 hours, GSW managed to post it's lowest 3-point total in a game this season  - with four at Augusta on Thursday evening - and follow with it's highest total by draining 13 on Friday.

Cameron Dozier led the Hurricanes in multiple categories, including points (21), rebounds (8), assists (6) and steals (4). Tevin Wise made 8 of 16 shots and had career bests with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Brandon Price added 15 points. Rakeem Hicks hit 6 of 9 from the floor on his way to a career-best 14 points and eight rebounds.

JR Washington posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead Lander. Purdie scored 20 points and Jarryd Coleman chipped in 12 points coming off the bench.

The Hurricanes return home to host Flagler College on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
